Hospital Bed Mattress

When it comes to patient care the choice of hospital bed mattress can be extremely important. These days there is a huge range of these products to choose from; this is good because there is a lot of variation in patient need. Putting a patient on the wrong mattress could have serious health consequences; it could mean that they require an extended stay in hospital or it could even lead to their death. There really is no doubt that the choice of hospital bed mattress is an important one.

What Difference Does the Hospital Bed Mattress Make?

Choosing the correct hospital bed mattress is important because patients spend a lot more time lying on this than they normally would at home. In fact some patients will be required to spend their whole time lying on one of these mattresses. Our bodies have not been designed to be lying flat all the time and this means that we are at risk of developing complications. One of the most common problems that people develop is bed sores.

Bed sores, or pressure sores as they are also called, are created because we are lying immobile and this puts constant pressure on some parts of the body. This pressure causes poor blood circulation to the area and after a while this can mean that the skin will start to break down. Things are complicated further if we have poor nutrition, if we are overweight, if we are incontinent, if we are underweight, or if we have diabetes. A bed sore can start of as a small ulcer but can quickly turn into a big problem with necrotic tissue and infection. It can sometimes take months to cure a pressure sore; maybe even years.

The proper hospital bed mattress can prevent these sores from arising. Some have a special design that means that less pressure is put on the body during extended lying periods – these are referred to as pressure relieving mattresses. These products have become very advanced in recent years and they have now almost eliminated the risk of these ulcers. It is important that anyone at risk of developing bed sores should have a pressure relieving mattress.

Another reason for a special hospital bed mattress is where the patient is obese. These bariatric mattresses have been especially designed to handle the extra weight and can provide additional support. Putting an obese patient on a normal mattress might not only leave them feeling uncomfortable but it could even damage their health.

Who Decides if You Need a Special Hospital Bed Mattress?

In most hospitals it is the nurses who decide which patients require a special hospital bed mattress. They make the decision using a special assessment tool; this assessment will be made regularly throughout the patient’s stay. These assessment tools tend to be fairly reliable and the development of problems like pressure sores now occur far less regularly than they did in the past. There really is not excuse for it with so many good hospital bed mattress options.
